Lydia delRossi of Aiken SC has had horses all her life and was very involved in foxhunting in Aiken, SC when she decided to open a Art Gallery by the name of "Equine Divine."  It became a quickly evolving mecca for all equine pursuits in art - paintings, jewelry, stoneware, fused glass, hand painted clothing, painted crystal glassware, rugs, sculptures - a one of a kind celebration of the equine lifestyle. In 5 short years she and her daughter, Alexandra had created a special unique gallery and were even written up in Southern Living magazine.  Artists and customers all over the SE knew Equine Divine and it became a place of beauty and joy with many foxhunting parties and special events held there to promote the horse life thread that runs thru all horse lovers.  Then 2009 hit  - BAM.

The sudden crash of the market and housing hit all at once and suddenly art was not the "investment" it had been and times got hard fast. With much sadness Lydia decided she had no choice but to sell the gallery as she simply could not underwrite it in such lean times and she was lucky enough to have a buyer walk in who could.  This buyer made small multiple payments agreement as part of the transfer and took over.  Sadly the era of Equine Divine had ended for Lydia - but unbeknownst to her a new one was about to start.

That very summer she had bought a former race horse "Lenny" as a project horse who had hoof issues. Lenny was big and strong and was able to rip up, tear, destroy and/or kick off all hoof soaking methods - the more expensive the quicker he seemed to be able to destroy it!  She hated to see him suffer with the pain of a abscess and out of sheer aggravation she sat down and designed a new "one piece - one step - slip on an tie " hoof soaking boot - then went about the business of finding it.  She wanted a boot that was pliable and easy to slip on, not to tall or too big to spook the horse but not too small to have to fight putting it onto a sore hoof, it had to be user friendly to both horse and owner as well as keep your head up and out of kicking range upon application, with multiple uses. and affordable.   NOTHING on the market fit the bill.

Undaunted she was now happy for the small art gallery payments to her since each one gave her time to develop parts of what would become "StepnSoak" -  a prototype and marketing test, retest, redesign, hire a patent attorney, find a manufacturer and slowly launch StepnSoak - a "one piece, slip on and tie" set of hoof soaking boots.  Initially the boots were made of a IV vinyl type material with 1 tie secured on either side to criss cross and that took off pretty well - then as manufacturing costs in CA grew she moved manufacturing to the East Coast and redesigned the ties to a stronger single 48" long side tie and used a denser vinyl.  The boot was 18" tall and 21" wide with a "slip on" aspect that allowed usage on any size hoof - they even broke into the hobby farm llama and commercial zoo markets.

Soon the big catalogues came to call and by 2010 StepnSoak was available in Dover's, Jeffers, Valley Vet, Schneider's and more. Then the plant who made the current line of "StepnSoak ULTRA" boots got a $1 million per month contract from the US government and all the smaller businesses they handled were pushed to the wayside.  It was a unexpected stumbling block but one that forced Lydia and her partner to look offshore at other bigger more professional manufacturing options and in doing so came back with the BEST set of  hoof soaking, cooling, Rx application and lower leg treatment boots on the market today.  "StepnSoak-911" is a bright yellow canvas/taurplin double polyvinyl coated set of two "slip on and tie" boots that have a single ribbed nylon side tie to criss cross secure and a durability that has no equal.  Still 18" tall "StepnSoak-911" now has a rounder bottom with a 25" circumference and can be used on any size hoof.  Pliable, sturdy, portable and endlessly reusable this new generation of StepnSoak will be the "go-to" tool in every barn - especially at the attractive price of 2 for only $39.95.  Yes, selling Equine Divine was a sad day but it was the day that StepnSoak was born - and keeps growing up to be only better!    www.stepnsoak.com

CROWD FUNDING SITE OPENING FOR WOMEN IN THE HORSE INDUSTRY

The Women's Horse Industry Network, a worldwide business network for women, has announced a crowd funding site for women working in the horse industry.

Like many of the crowd funding sites, individuals and corporations can make contributions to the women listed on the site. Each woman seeking funding will offer rewards based upon the amount of the contribution. The rewards will range from identification on their websites, social media exposure, hats, t-shirts and equity in the business.

This is the brainchild of Catherine Masters, the President of the Women's Horse Industry Network. "There are nonprofit rescues, start up companies, manufacturers, racehorse owners, breeders, entrepreneurs,  riding schools, equine health professionals, dressage riders, rodeo riders, etc. who are seeking capital. Instead of getting lost in the shuffle of the other massive crowd funding sites, I thought it made a lot of sense to isolate these fund raising efforts so that more people would know about them and be able to contribute.  I have no idea how the public will respond to it but it's something I thought deserved a try," she states.

She is also hoping that the women who are participating this year at the Triple Crown races will get some media attention and help shine the light on the fact that there are a lot of women working in the horse industry.

Sometimes, because there is so much out there on the internet, finding what you need is challenging. By "narrowcasting" she is hoping she can do for the horse industry what cable did for the television industry. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION
